Founded in 1976 by the great American ballet pioneer Mary Day and under Septime Webre's artistic directorship since 1999, The Washington Ballet is an ensemble of powerfully athletic classical ballet dancers performing a repertory of new work and creativity. Considered one of the country's finest ballet companies, The Washington Ballet is recognized nationally and internationally for its high standards, artistic integrity, and unwavering commitment to presenting the very best in ballet. The Washington Ballet grew out of the success of The Washington School of Ballet, founded and directed for more than 60 years by legendary dance pioneer Mary Day. The School opened in 1944 and the Company was established in 1976 with Miss Day's singular vision for both clearly illuminated: to create a stellar institution of teaching, creating and enlightening through dance. Now under the directorship of Septime Webre, The Washington Ballet is recognized world wide for its excellence in classical ballet training, its dedication to presenting the best in classical and contemporary ballet and its devotion to bringing ballet to broad communities throughout Washington DC.
